Disaster Response

Region 4 Behavioral Health Disaster Response and Preparedness

Disaster behavioral health promotes resilience – supporting people rather than treating people. The job is to normalize the reactions people are experiencing, and educate them about common reactions and stress management techniques.

Disaster behavioral health volunteers include mental health professionals and caring adults who have taken disaster behavioral health training. They must meet our requirements in the Region to be a volunteer and be willing to continue their learning / practice to ensure they are up to date and ready to deploy if needed.

Nebraska Responders are trained in Psychological First Aid; Curriculum develop in 2004 shortened to from a week long training from Red Cross and Red Crescent Society to 6 hours. A section pertaining to De-escalation was added to the Nebraska curriculum for training persons technics on how to help calm down someone who is very or upset or angry so you can have a more logical conversation.
